Last week I stood in a workshop in India and watched a rough diamond become something else entirely. I've spent years building Lumeniri around the idea that lab grown diamonds could be beautiful and considered, but nothing prepared me for seeing the actual process in person. I'm not embarrassed to say it brought me to tears.
What I Didn't Expect to See
There's a reputation that follows lab grown diamonds everywhere, that they're somehow machine-made, cold, produced rather than crafted. I understood the science well enough to know that wasn't the full story. What I didn't understand, not really, until I was standing there watching it happen, was how much of the journey is entirely human.
I watched a cutter turn a rough stone under a loupe for what felt like an hour before he made a single cut. He was reading the crystal, he told me, looking for the one angle that would let the most light through. Get it wrong and you lose carats you can never recover. So he waited. Turned it again. Marked a line so faint I could barely see it. Then, finally, cut.
I watched a setter adjust a prong by fractions of a millimeter, checking, adjusting, checking again, until the stone sat exactly right. Too tight and the diamond looks lifeless. Too loose and it won't survive a lifetime of wear. Somewhere in between is the setting that lets the stone breathe and holds it anyway, and finding that point is a skill built over years, not something any machine does for you.
The Part of the Story I Actually Want to Tell
Growing a diamond in a lab, rather than pulling it from the earth, is only the first sentence of the story. Everything after that, the cutting, the polishing, the setting, is done by hand, by artisans in workshops across India carrying forward skill passed down through generations. That's the part that gets lost in how people talk about lab grown diamonds. It isn't a shortcut. It's still a craft, still slow, still entirely dependent on someone's hands and someone's judgment.
I came home from that trip wanting everyone who wears a Lumeniri piece to know that. Not because it's a marketing line, but because I watched it happen, and it changed how I see every piece we make.
